Journals

The following journals are records I kept during my various canoe and camping trips between 1980 and roughly 2000. When I transcribed them from the original logs I made the decision to not change anything except for basic spelling errors and some really bad grammer. So, what you read is a reflection of the moment in time when I wrote it - undedited. Hopefully, the writings reflect a personal growth over the course of the 20+ years of canoeing in the wilderness areas of the Quetico and BWCA.

Flambeau Flowage May 1980 The inaugural trip with my new wooden canoe
Boundary Waters May 1980 My first two week solo trip starting at the Moose River landing and winding through Lac La Croix, McAree Lake, to Gebeonequat, Oyster and back up the Moose River.
Quetico September 1980 I so enjoyed my first two-week solo canoe trip I decided to do a second one in 1980 - this one much more challenging than my Spring trip.
Boundary Waters September 1981 This was a brief, one-week trip from the very tip of the Fernberg Road
Quetico May - June 1982 My first three week canoe trip! In addition to a challenging experience I confronted two issues - the death of Sigurd Olson and my not being able to take my Black Lab along.
Quetico May -June 1985 A two week solo trip starting out of Cache Bay. Highlight was a day-long paddle up Monroe Creek
Quetico May - June 1992 The second three week trip into Quetico - this time with Frank. It was a round trip adventure starting at Basswood Falls and circling through Elk, Darky, William, Brent, McIntyre and Kett Lakes back to Basswood.
Quetico July - August 1994 A bit over two weeks exploring parts of Kawnipi Lake and areas north with my canoe partner Frank. Kasha also was with me as we explored Agnes, Kawnipi, LeMay, McKenzie and Murdoch Lakes.
Western Out West July 4 - 15, 1995 Two plus weeks traveling national and state highways to Yellowstone NP, south to Grand Teton then east to the Black Hills of South Dakota and Badlands NP.
Alaska Sept. 1 - 16, 1996 Just over two weeks exploring Alaska from the tundra of Denali to the rainforest of the Kenai Penninsula.
Quetico June 1999 Almost two weeks with Frank as we ventured north through the Falls Chain to Kawnipi then up the Waiwag River to Mack and Cullen Lakes then back through Saganagons and home.
